Through the years I have personally worked on a number of websites for businesses large and small. There are all kinds of reasons people develop websites from social interaction to making the almighty dollar.
When the intent is to publish press releases, articles or maybe blogging about events, Wordpress (http://www.wordpress.org) has been one of the most useful tools I have seen. Considering that Wordpress is open source software which can be FREE to use is extremely nice. Another big factor is the ability to take the code with you if/when you decide to change web hosting companies.
There is no telling how many times I have heard about people wanting to switch web developers or hosting companies only to learn they do not get to keep the code without paying large additional fees. This feels wrong to many site owners leaving a bad taste for internet development long afterwards. This is just one of the reasons people tend to feel about web developers similar to used car salesmen.
So What Is Wordpress?
Wordpress is code written by several developers over the years donated to the public trust so no one company (e.g. Microsoft, Borland, etc.) will ever own it. Many programmers continually make enhancements for and/or changes to the code keeping it moving forward and becoming better and better. This keeps the code viable to use with great features for us all. Wordpress is a blogging software package that has options for you to create static pages (e.g. home page, about us, contact us, etc.) as well as post pages where you can write about virtually anything you desire on your website. You can create categories for all of your content making it easier to segregate pages in a totally organized manner.
There are a number of plugins that enhance Wordpress to do any number of things. Considering how many businesses use Wordpress around the world, there have already been plugins to do virtually anything you would desire of a blog website. Some examples of these plugin features are: calendars, linking posts with pages, optimizing pages for search engines, What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) page editors, and many more!
Are There Other Content Management Systems?
Of course there are many others. From Joomla to OSCommerce, there are any number of open source content management systems to choose from. I have often chosen Wordpress for blogging and/or other sites that do not offer to sale products. The reason for this choice has been about ease of use, flexibility and durability.
When ecommerce is needed, OSCommerce has been a steady choice for several of my customers. Again, this is an open source application with similar benefits to Wordpress mentioned above.
In Conclusion…
Wordpress has proven to be a very durable open source application that has been steadily improved upon by a wide variety of programmers and developers around the world. This software has been used by thousands upon thousands of business with great success over the years. Additionally, this software is for the public trust with the intent to never be owned by software giants like Microsoft and Borland making this a tool that you don’t have worry about hidden costs in the foreseeable future.
